Good afternoon,
Was looking online and came across your website and I thought I’d pop a wee email your way and let you know about a project I am involved with called Over The Water and to see if there was any potential in getting a gig at The City Cafe. I am sure you are inundated with requests like this but it would be great if we can work something out as I have been in the bar several times and really was impressed with the high level of customer service on offer and feel that that matches the ethos of what we want to achieve as an acoustic duo.
Myself – vocals/ percussion – and Graham Smith – Acoustic guitar/ backing vocals – have been together for over 6 years now and in that time we have played in The Jekyl and Hyde, Berts Bar, Mathers Bar, The Morningside Glory, Tonic, The Steamie, The Baillie, Leith and Edinburgh Folk Club as well as Leith FM. We mostly do covers of well loved and well known songs, but we try and offer an alternative setlist to those commonly on offer. We can provide up to three hours and full PA/ Equipment etc. We also only play songs that we know about in terms of the history of the song and history of the band, the reasons why the songs were wrote so that we can have chat with the punters about the music. We love listening to the audience during the breaks and finding out their musical interests, influences and recommendations so that we can include them in the next gig we have at that particular venue.
A typical sample of our songs include:
Land Down Under – Men at Work
Dignity – Deacon Blue
Maggie May – Rod Stewart
With or Without You – u2
Trouble – Ray la Montagne
Brown Eyed Girl – Van Morrison
We are happy to learn specific songs too. If any of this seems like it could be of some use to you then sure send me a wee email. I am more than happy to pop down at some point and have a wee chat if that is more appropriate.
Thanking you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you,
Neil Hyndman

I love the City Cafe, one of the best places to get some food in Edinburgh and the drinks selection is excellent too. Great service, great atmosphere and reasonably priced too- what more could you want?
Just realised you did not have our e’mail address for the previous e’mail extolling the many virtues of your Moroccan chicken tagine with cinammon and sultana cous cous — please contact, if possible matw1@talktalk.net
many thanks in anticipation.
Moira Weir (Mrs)
We visited the cafe on Saturday 30 July this year and personally, I was overcome with the food we received. My husband ordered a steak club sandwich and I ordered the Morrocan tagine with chicken and cinammon and sultana cous cous.
I couldn’t get enough of the dish, it was absolutely delicious, so much so that I have now purchased a tagine to try out for myself.
I would be very grateful if you could maybe e’mail me the recipe for this dish as I loved it and have told all and sundry to visit you when in Edinburgh, as we certainly will, for sure.
Hi
Just wondering if you still have a happy hour between 5-8pm everyday. and if so, what are typical prices for pints/bottles? We will be visiting Edinburgh for a few days next week from Ireland, so a place with good food and cheapish drinks makes sense.
Thanks
Trevor
This is my kind of bar. Modern, contemporary, unpretentious and it played good music. Admittedly it was quiet (it was a Sunday after all) however I’ve been told this place hots up on other nights. I’ll be sure to be back to see for myself!
‘The City Cafe has had a complete refit as of Dec 2010 (we visited Feb 2011 on a quiet Sunday night). The diner aesthetic has completely taken over with the space split into booths, bar chrome shined up, a Wurlitzer juke box moved to the front and the venue downstairs becoming hire-only. There is much more focus on food and the diner feel (menus at every table, staff in bowling-style shirts) and the food looks pretty good. We’ll be back to sample it for sure. The ever-so-slightly cooler-than-thou feel of the place is gone, although I have no idea what the Fri/Sat crowd is like. Free wifi and comfy seats. Win.
Visited on a Friday night, when my friend was one of the first DJ’s to play a set at the newly refurbished cafe.
We were welcomed warmly on arrival and before we had taken a seat they had taken a drinks order and offered to bring them over to our table. When our drinks arrived we were given a free bowl of Popcorn which was refilled throughout the night, which was probably just as well as it didn’t last long!
We didn’t sample any the food but the Menu and the overall theme of the bar is distinctly ‘American’ I am glad to say however that unlike some restaurants that are share the same theme no fake american accents were used! The staff were really friendly and totally sincere.
They do an all day breakfast, and the menu has something to please everyone. The best thing on the menu for me was the fact that you could colour it in!! Ok probably meant for children as its family friendly but me and my friend still had a colour off!!
I had a really good night here, as did my friends and I am going back soon to try the food so maybe I can give it 5 stars like I wanted to.
It’s a really nice place to be in general. I love sitting here no matter the weather, it’s a nice experience with a lovely atmosphere!
It just reeks cool, and it’s sort of a place to be seen but to push aside mainstream George Street bars.
Make sure you’re looking cool when you’re in here, maybe come here after a hair-cut or after a few cocktails!!
Anyway the food is great not a huge selection but well worth the money. They also do the best breakfast i think i’ve ever had. Superb fry up for only £7.50 nom nom nom.
Went in for food twice over the weekend. First time i’ve been in since it had its 50′s Diner Overhaul.
Great cafe for something a little bit different. Portions huge and milkshakes yummy! Have a look at the right end of the bar near the “cigarette” machine for some 20% off food flyers.
Staff were really nice, food was awesome (try the Mofongo).
